Why I Write: Part 1

This is an important question, one that I’ve been pondering for a while. I’ll attempt to tone the sarcasm down a notch; this doesn’t mean it won’t be there at all, just less. It’s taken me a long time to really completely realize this reason, and as the title would suggest this isn’t the only reason, but it’s one of the main reasons at least. And it’s the one that’s the easiest to explain without getting into the misanthropic side of things.

For as long as I can possible remember I have always been into books. Whether they were factual books about sharks that live deep in the ocean, or fictional books about pirates that sail the seven seas and hunt those sharks that live deep in the ocean; I just loved to read. I loved the places you could go all from the comfort of your own home.

As I got older, I got into Cristopher Paolini with his Inheritance Series. Then Tolkien with Middle Earth; I’ll have a middle earth duel with any fan any day of the week. Harry Potter was phenomenal, I use to dream about being adopted by James and Lily Potter. Benjamin Potter was a pretty cool name at the time. I would create characters and weave myself into their other stories. Books were never just books for me, they were escapes, ways for me to get away.

All of those stories, they all have a wondrous fantasy world that, although at times fear would be high, it would make for a truly fascinating adventure. I’ve always dreamed of “going on an adventure.” Doesn’t everyone dream of adventures and escapades? Well, so I decided that I would take what I already did and applied so well for other people’s stories, and create my own.

I created my own. I created worlds, where I could travel and roam. Each of the characters, the main ones (not the storm troopers or red shirts of my worlds), I put a little bit of my personality into them. From the young evil king of the empire, to the superhero of legendary status, each of them I can find part of me in. In a way it almost feels like I am going on those adventures.

I make those characters, the wars, monsters and legends; I make them so that I can get the awesome opportunity of traveling and adventuring through those lands. There are no shortage of adventures you can have if your imagination is good, and mine is painfully good. It’s why Emily gets frustrated with me when I won’t watch horror movies, that and because I’m a huge baby.

I write to give me, Ben Wright, the privilege of being on those journeys.
